Ruffed Grouse

Grouse Ruffed Grouse - Bonasa umbellus

Ruffed grouse hunting is done in some of the thickest, meanest, wildest, loneliest and most beautiful places in the world. Ruffs are creatures of the edge and the young forest, inhabiting those magical seams of habitat between brush and timber, timber and wetland, aspen cutover and marsh, tag alder bottom lands and forested uplands. The ruffed grouse lives in places where cover types meet and meld. A full-sized adult ruffed grouse will weigh in at 1 to 2 pounds and wear plumage of red-chestnut to gray, or any intergrade in between.
