Whitetail Deer Campfire Cliches and Falsehoods

There is a lot of BS that is said around a campfire at a deer hunting camp. Some of my favorite cliches and falsehoods are:

"The deer have gone nocturnal."

Whenever there aren't any deer seen on consecutive hunts, some good old country boy says, "The trouble of it is, the deer have gone nocturnal." That country boy is wrong! The deer have not gone nocturnal; deer are nocturnal. Whitetail deer are nocturnal animals and by definition, nocturnal animals are most active at night.

"The deer are moving at midday."

Most whitetail deer hunters only hunt in the morning (at dawn) or in the afternoon (at dusk). Whenever there aren't any deer seen during consecutive morning and afternoon hunts, some good old country boy says, "The onlyest thing is, the deer are moving at midday." Again, the country boy is wrong! Some deer may be moving at midday, but most deer are moving at night. Again, Whitetail deer are nocturnal animals and by definition, nocturnal animals are most active at night.
